Myrtle Point High School had their Senior Awards night on Tuesday May 24th in the Oaks building at the fairgrounds. There were 12 Seniors who received academic, athletic and attendance awards. The scholarship recipients were also announced. It was a good evening of recognizing the seniors and all of their hard work and accomplishments at Myrtle Point High School. In addition, it was a exciting look to their future with all of the scholarships they received to further their educations.
The program started with the Academic Awards. Each department awarded a student of the year. The recipients are as follows.
FACS (Family and Consumer Science) -- Sarah Nicholson
Spanish --Hayden Weekly
Art -- Denlani Firkus
Band -- Cathleen Hermann
Shop -- Coy Farmer
Physical Education -- Coy Farmer
Drama -- Delani Firkus
Robotics -- Isabeau Brown
Mathematics -- Allison Storts
English -- Hayden Weekly
Social Studies -- Allison Storts
Science -- Allison Storts
Next, the students who completed 4 years career and technical education in the shop program were recognized. They were Coy Farmer, Hurley Grantham and Abram Moreno.
The program then moved to the athletic awards. The athletes who earned a varsity letter in their sport for all four years of high school were recognized.
Cross country -- Allison Storts and Sarah Nicholson
Volleyball -- Hayden Weekly and Madison Reynolds
Basketball -- Hayden Weekly and Madison Reynolds
Track -- Allison Storts, Madison Reynolds and Sarah Nicholson
Cheerleading -- Cathleen Hermann
The attendance awards honored students who had outstanding attendance their Senior year. Coy Farmer had an attendance rate of 96.85, Hurley Grantham had 97.20 and Elena Blazquez had an attendance rate of 99.65. She only missed 1/2 a day the entire year.
Next, the students who did Expanded Options and Dual Credit Programs were recognized. These students took college classes while still in high school. Lytasha Robbins earned 8 credits, Isabeau Brown, Sarah Nicholson, Allison Storts each earned 12 credits, Madison Reynolds earned 15 credits and Hayden Weekly earned 24 credits.
There was a second section of Academic Awards to honor students more more than their classroom work.
Most Improved Senior -- Abram Moreno
Iron Student (who took all of the dual credit courses offered at MPHS earning 24 college credits) -- Hayden Weekly
School Spirit -- Allison Storts
Citizenship Award (with over 330 hours of community service) -- Sarah Nicholson
Best Work Ethic Award -- Sarah Nicholson
Principal’s Choice Award -- Delani Firkus
Outstanding Scholar Award -- Hayden Weekly
The "You Inspire Us" Award -- Coy Farmer
The program completed with the presentation of the scholarships that the seniors applied for and received. The amount of money that they will receive to fund their futures was astounding!! Six seniors turned in scholarship applications and the scholarships awarded totaled over $135,000. This was the most that has been awarded to any graduating class.
In conclusion, Mrs. Fandel had a message for the graduating class: "I am so proud of you and the mark you have made at Myrtle Point High School. Congratulations on your many accomplishments!!"
